RSHE
RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) and RHE (Relationships and Health Education) together are known as RSHE.
RSHE is an integral aspect of our school curriculum and one that encompasses all that we aim to achieve through our mission statement and core values; to give children the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to be caring people, responsible citizens and to lead healthy lives.
Matthew’s Gospel (22:37-40) says
'You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second resembles it: You must love your neighbour as yourself.’
As such, we must treat ourselves as vessels of God’s love, and treat others with the same love and respect. These principles perfectly match with the central values of the RSHE curriculum- we learn how to respect and take care of ourselves in both our bodies and in our relationships.
Therefore, RE and RSHE are often integrated when taught, for example through
- themes such as Baptism as a way to understand belonging, supporting others, friendship.
- parables and scripture as ways to live our lives by
- Catholic Social Teaching to understand themes such as stewardship, global citizenship, human dignity or poverty
RSHE also complements the teaching in Science, Online Safety, Design and Technology (cooking and nutrition) and Physical Education.
Relationship and Sex Education (RSE)
Relationships and Sex Education is a non-statutory element of the wider Relationships and Health Education, which is a statutory curriculum. The two aspects support children to learn about themselves, their relationships and the beauty of creation. We firmly believe RSE teaching is a vital part of a child’s education and that without providing this education, we leave children vulnerable to receiving their education second hand and often from sources which may damage them and their understanding of love and relationships.
We use the Diocesan approved curriculum known as ‘Life to the Full’. Ten:Ten is the education provider who has worked closely with the Catholic Education Service to provide this RSHE curriculum (Life to the Full) which is based on the teachings of the Catholic Church and aligns with the DFE guidance.
‘I have come that you might have life and have it to the full’
John 10:10
As a Catholic School, we believe that parents have the first responsibility for the education of their children. We share the curriculum with parents and invite parents of children in Years 4 to 6, to attend a talk to share further details of the curriculum content and to answer questions to support parents to educate their children at home.
In school, through our pastoral care and focus on the development of the whole human person, we actively build a school climate that promotes the belief that as Catholics we:
- Love our neighbour
- Appreciate that all individuals are unique, created by God and so equal and precious
- Preserve the dignity of every individual
This means that what we teach in the RSHE curriculum is lived out, throughout the school.
