At St. Dunstan’s we want children to learn history, but to also learn to be young historians.  As such, a high-quality history education is key.

The St Dunstan’s curriculum helps children gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. It inspires curiosity and provides children with the tools and techniques to question the events and occurrences of the world around them, to understand how or why events happened and the impact of these on the people and the place then and today.

History learning is enriched through visitors to school, immersive days and through trips to places of historic interest.  Throughout their time at St. Dunstan’s, children will visit museums:

• Milestones Museum (changes to lifestyles over time)
• Chertsey Museum (Vikings in Surrey)
• The Lightbox (The Tudors in Woking)

and other historic sites:

• Hampton Court (Tudor monarchs in Surrey),
• Henley Fort (World War II in Surrey),
• Butser Farm (Stone Age to Iron Age in South East England) and
• The Peace Garden (local history).

Trips allow children to gain a clearer understanding of how the people in these ages actually lived, to look at and hold artefacts, wear clothes of the time, ask questions, learn more about how historians work and think and imagine what life was like at that time in history. 

Through access to a range of non-fiction and fiction books.  Children can read around the topic, developing wider and deeper knowledge of the time period and to support them to make firmer connections and develop greater empathy for the people of the time.
